Developmental Editing
This is often the first kind of editing a first draft needs. Rather than worrying about the little things like spelling and grammar, I’ll look at the overall picture. What are the stakes? What themes are we dealing with? What kind of structure?
What I focus on in developmental editing:
Structure and flow
Plot and pacing
Character development and motivation
Theme and emotional resonance
Scene effectiveness and balance
Voice
I’ll read through the manuscript twice: once to get an overall feel for the story, and again to analyse and develop my thoughts. I’ll then provide a detailed editorial letter with my own observations and actionable suggestions.
When you’re writing your first draft, it’s easy to let myopia take over. That’s why you need a fresh set of eyes, someone experiencing the story for the very first time. If you’re ready to revisit your draft and hear that all-important outside perspective, I’d love to work with you.
